What is the smart battery system? How does it work? Is it a dual battery? How long does it last?

Most Spaceships don't come with two batteries (dual battery), they come with a smart battery system. This is an intelligent system that makes sure the battery isn't drained when the engine isn't running. It makes sure there's always power left to start the engine the next morning. Nowadays, we also have campervan models with a second battery aka dual battery aka leisure battery, which is also explained below.

The 12V smart battery system of your Spaceship allows you to run internal items, like the fridge and USB ports on the car battery. It protects the battery. It's like having a second car battery. The battery won't go flat. It's a closed system, with no plugs, and no connections for outside items or devices. It charges when you are driving and it powers the internal items when the engine isn't running.

You can use the fridge and use USB ports at night. No worries. The smart battery system will protect the battery so you can always start the engine again in the morning. As you'll be driving again the next morning the system will fully charge itself again so you can use it again the next evening/night.

The system is self-charging. As long as you drive on a regular basis you'll be fine. Being on a campsite at 6pm and spending the night (leaving the fridge etc on) and then driving the next morning at 9am is fine. That's what most customers do on a road trip. Staying on a campsite for several days, leaving it all on will drain the system. But even then, there will always be a little bit of power left to start the engine so you can drive and charge again. That's why it's called a smart battery system.

Spaceships Campervans with a solar panel on its roof

The following Spaceships Campervans have a solar panel on their roof.

This means that the battery system is being charged by the sun as well, so you don't have to drive regularly to keep the battery topped up. So how long can you stay off the grid with these campervans with a solar panel?

Generally speaking, the following stats can be attached to these specific campervans.

  • The campervans with a solar panel and a smart battery system can remain stationary for up to 3 days (so no driving required for up to 3 days)

  • The campervans with a solar panel, a smart battery system and a leisure battery can remain stationary for up to 7 days (so no driving required for up to 7 days)

How do we know this? Well we have tested it ourselves. We're a curious bunch.

There are also some other external factors to keep in mind about the above-mentioned stats. A solar panel needs the sun to be able to do its work of turning sunshine into power for the battery of the campervan. So if you park your Spaceships campervan under a tree or if you encounter several days of cloud-packed skies, this will negatively impact the solar panel and thus have the same impact on how long you can stay at a campsite without driving.

The same goes for how you use the campervan and its battery... The more devices you run off the USB ports or the vehicle's battery (like having the stereo on, leaving the headlights on etc), the more the number of days you can stay at a campsite without driving will decrease.

Tip: set the fridge on setting 2 to 3 for maximum use of the battery charge while keeping your food cool.
