The toilet won't flush. How does the flush tank of the fixed toilet work and what can I check?

The self-contained Spaceships campervans with the fixed toilet next to the sink (not the Cosmo's slide-out drawer toilet) have a Thetford toilet with a hand pump flush. The flush water does not come from the main water tank: it has its own flush tank, and when the flush stops working, the fix is usually very simple.

First check: is the flush tank filled with water?

The flush tank is in the top half of the toilet, above the waste tank. To fill it:

  1. Unscrew the small filler cap on top of the toilet (the white cap on the top half).

  2. Fill the top tank with fresh water, up to near full.

  3. Add a little pink toilet rinse fluid - this keeps the flush fresh and helps the toilet work as it should.

  4. Screw the cap back on firmly.

  5. Operate the hand pump a few times so the water starts flowing to the pump.

If you have only been filling the small spout next to the sink, that is a different tank: the flush only works when the top flush tank is filled.

Still no water when you pump?

If the flush tank is filled but no water comes out of the flush when you use the pump, the flush hose may have come off the top of the pump.

Please do not try to reattach the hose yourself. The fitting can crack when it is pushed back on by hand, which turns a small fix into a bigger repair.

Instead, contact our 24/7 Roadside Assistance partner NZRA so they can get it sorted for you:

  • Call 0800 772 237 and choose option 3 for Roadside Assistance.

  • They will arrange a workshop or another way to get the flush working again.
