How to use, empty & stow the toilet of the Cosmo VW Campervan?

The Cosmo is fitted with a Thetford Porta Potti 145 toilet, mounted securely inside a sliding drawer.

Accessing the toilet

  1. Open the drawer: push both blue drawer levers DOWN to release it and pull the drawer out.

  2. Remove the drawer front: place your hand inside the drawer handle and pull the front panel upwards to remove it.

  3. Slide the drawer out far enough to allow the toilet lid to open fully. The toilet is now ready to use.

Using the toilet

The toilet has two main sections: the upper tank (toilet bowl and fresh-water flush tank) and the lower tank (waste-holding tank).

  • Before use: make sure there is sufficient water in the flush-water tank. If required, a small amount of water can be pumped into the bowl before using the toilet.

  • Open the waste valve with the blade/valve handle - this allows waste to pass from the toilet bowl into the holding tank.

  • Use the toilet normally. Only use toilet paper suitable for portable/chemical toilets and avoid excessive amounts.

  • Flush with the manual bellows pump on top of the toilet - several short pumps normally provide a better rinse than one large pump.

  • After flushing, fully close the blade/valve. Always leave the waste valve fully closed when the toilet is not in use.

When to empty

The Porta Potti 145 does not have a waste-level indicator, so the waste tank needs to be checked regularly. Do not allow the waste level to reach the valve opening. For comfort and hygiene, empty the toilet regularly rather than waiting until the tank is completely full. The waste tank holds approximately 12 litres.

Removing & emptying the waste tank

  1. Double check the waste valve is fully closed before removing the waste tank.

  2. Tilt the toilet forward, lift the handle at the rear of the toilet, and rotate the toilet forward so the upper and lower sections can be separated.

  3. Separate the upper toilet/flush-water section from the lower waste-holding tank using the normal Thetford release mechanism, and remove the waste tank from the campervan.

  4. Take the lower waste tank to an approved toilet or campervan dump station - never empty it anywhere else.

  5. Rotate the pour-out spout away from the tank and remove the cap. Hold the tank securely by its handle and position the spout over the dump point.

  6. Tip the tank so the waste begins flowing. While emptying, press the vent button to let air into the tank so it empties smoothly without splashing (do not press the vent button until the pour-out spout is pointing downwards).

  7. Once empty: add a small amount of clean water, replace the cap, gently rinse, and empty the rinse water into the dump point. Repeat if necessary. Never use a high-pressure hose to clean the toilet.

Preparing the toilet for use again

After emptying, add portable-toilet waste treatment/chemical to the waste tank according to the product manufacturer's instructions, and add the required amount of water if specified. Make sure the pour-out spout cap is securely fitted and return the spout to its storage position.

Reinstalling & stowing

  1. Return the waste tank to the campervan and reconnect the upper and lower sections following the normal Thetford procedure - make sure they are securely locked together.

  2. Rotate the toilet back into its normal position in the drawer. Check that the waste valve is fully closed, the two sections are securely connected, the waste tank cap is fitted, and nothing obstructs the drawer.

  3. Refit the drawer front, making sure it is correctly seated.

  4. Lift both blue drawer levers UP and keep them lifted while pushing the drawer back into the cabinet, pushing it all the way into the fully closed locking position.

The toilet drawer locks in three positions: fully closed, halfway extended, and fully extended. You may need to keep both blue levers lifted when moving past these locking positions. Before driving, always make sure the toilet drawer is FULLY CLOSED AND LOCKED.

Please do not

  • Do not travel with the toilet drawer extended.

  • Do not leave the waste valve open when the toilet is not in use.

  • Do not overfill the waste tank.

  • Do not put wipes, sanitary products, paper towels, nappies or other rubbish into the toilet.

  • Do not force the toilet valve or drawer mechanism.

  • Do not empty toilet waste onto the ground, into stormwater drains or anywhere other than an appropriate toilet/dump station.
