Winter in New Zealand runs from June to August, and while our winters are generally mild compared to other countries, some areas, especially in the South Island, can experience snowy and icy conditions. Here’s what you need to know about snow chains for your campervan adventure.
Do I need snow chains? Short answer: only if you’re travelling in specific areas
Most Space Travellers won’t need chains, especially if you’re sticking to the North Island or main roads in the South Island.
Chains are required in certain alpine or remote areas, particularly:
Crown Range Road (Queenstown)
Ski field access roads (e.g., Coronet Peak, The Remarkables)
Other Council-managed roads where "chains required" signs are displayed or conditions demand it.
When must I use snow chains?
You must carry and fit snow chains when:
A "chains required" sign (including variable message signs) is displayed.
The road is covered in snow or compacted ice and your tyres are slipping.
Ski field staff, Police or QLDC (Queenstown Lakes District Council) staff instruct you to fit chains.
Your vehicle is struggling for grip.
⚠️ Important: Starting May 2026, motorists who fail to fit chains when required on QLDC-managed roads may face a $750 fine. This is to ensure roads stay safe and clear for everyone, including grit trucks and emergency vehicles.
Where can I get snow chains?
Hire from Spaceships: Our depots have snow chains available for hire.
External hire: Specialised companies in Queenstown and other alpine areas offer chain rentals. For example, chains are required by law on the Milford Road between July and October, you can pick up a set in Queenstown and drop them off on your way back.
Do I need to know how to fit them?
Yes! It’s not enough to just carry chains, you must know how to fit them safely and correctly. Check out our guide on fitting snow chains for step-by-step help.
Bonus tips for roadtripping in winter
Plan ahead: Check weather and road conditions before setting off.
Allow extra time: Winter driving can be slower, don’t rush.
Pull over safely: Fit chains before reaching icy or steep sections.
Follow instructions: Always comply with signs, staff or Police directions.
Stay calm: If conditions worsen, find a safe place to wait it out.
