Can I use my digital driving licence in New Zealand?

Various countries have moved to a digital version of their driving licence. New Zealand hasn't made that switch yet, so Kiwis aren't used to digital driving licences yet. However, our "Land Transport (Driver Licensing) Rule 1999 does not specify any format requirements for overseas driver licences. Drivers may legally drive under valid current foreign licences so long as they are written in English, or they carry an accurate English translation."

This also means that you can hire and drive a Spaceships campervan in New Zealand with a digital driving licence. ✅

Just make sure you upload a copy of your licence to our Online Check-in Portal - which opens once your booking is confirmed - via a screenshot if your driving licence app allows that or send us the time-sensitive QR code to share your licence details with a third-party like a rental company. We need to have a copy in our secure systems to make sure that people picking up a campervan are allowed to drive in New Zealand.

We do recommend that you also bring the physical version of your driving licence, just in case. Then you always have a back-up, in case your phone battery is running low, to show the authorities when they request it.
