When selecting a place to spend the night - there are rules, you can't just spend the night on the side of the road - you'll notice that there are holiday parks, camping grounds and campsites. Campsites are basic places to spend they night. They are often located in remote and scenic areas and are the best option for campers that want to spend the night as close as nature as possible. Campsites are often run by DOC - Department of Conservation - or Local or Regional Councils. They offer basic facilities like basic toilets and simple running water, although there are plenty campsites that offer no facilities at all.

And the facilities are great, think fully-equipped kitchen, living room with TV and other entertainment, bathrooms with hot showers like at home. It is a more comfortable & luxurious way to go camping in New Zealand.
