The insurance options are simple when booking a Spaceships campervan. We provide three different insurance options for your campervan road trip in New Zealand.

  1. Basic Insurance: Included with all Spaceships Campervans, for budget-conscious travellers that don’t mind the bond to pay for damages or a Vehicle Write-Off Fee. This has a bond of $5,000, a Vehicle Write-Off Liability of up to $18,000 and an Accident Admin Fee of $100.

  2. Partial Insurance: A balanced option with a lower bond and reduced liability. This has a bond of $3,000, a Vehicle Write-Off Liability of up to $9,000 and an Accident Admin Fee of $100.

  3. Stress-Free: Our most comprehensive coverage, now with more benefits included. It’s the best insurance option for complete peace of mind on your road trip in New Zealand: $0 bond, $0 Vehicle Write-Off Liability and $0 Accident Admin Fee plus added cover for just $35 extra per day (capped at 50 days). The Insurance Options apply to all ages.

Did you know? Car insurance isn't compulsory in New Zealand, so even if an accident isn't your fault you can still be liable for the damage if we are unsuccessful in recovering the costs from the other party involved. Stress-Free is the only insurance option that covers a situation like this. It's the only option that will give you complete peace of mind while roadtripping in New Zealand.

Our insurance options are affordable on long road trips, as both the Partial Insurance Option and Stress-Free Insurance Option are capped at 50 days. This means that you'll never pay more than 50 days for the insurance, even if your road trip is longer than that, while still being covered for the full duration of your trip.

  • The maximum insurance fee you'll pay for Partial Insurance is $1,250 (50 days)

  • The maximum insurance fee you'll pay for Stress-Free Insurance is $1,750 (50 days)

So even if your road trip is 60, 70, or 80 days or even more days, you'll pay that capped aka maximum amount for Partial or Stress-Free Insurance to get insurance cover for the full duration of your trip. This means that your insurance price per day will become cheaper the longer you travel.

How our campervan insurance works

If you're travelling on Basic Insurance you are liable for $5,000 while on Partial Insurance you are liable for $3,000 (or more if you breach the conditions of the rental contract). Liable means the maximum amount you will pay in case of damages or accidents - basically any incident where an insurance claim is needed.

You must have this amount available on your credit card or debit card to cover potential damage to the vehicle. We don't take the amount from your card when you start your road trip, we only freeze it in case something happens. However, the maximum amount of $5,000 (Basic) or $3,000 (Partial) needs to be available.

If something happens on your road trip - damage, accident etc - which damages the campervan, the repair costs of these damages will be deducted from the frozen amount on your card aka the bond. If the cost to repair the campervan is less than the bond, you'll get the difference back. If it is more and no breach of contract has happened, then the full bond will be used. Therefore, in normal circumstances, the bond is the maximum amount you will be liable for, the maximum amount you will pay in case of damages.

Stress-Free Insurance covers the most and doesn't have any bond. When travelling on Stress-Free you won't pay anything extra when damages happen, unless a breach of contract has happened, like illegal actions or illegal driving behaviour!
