Is there such a thing as Damage Waivers - CDW or LDW - when renting a campervan in New Zealand?

The short & sweet answer: NO, these waivers do not exist in New Zealand.

Spaceships New Zealand offers campervan hire with a range of insurance options. Real insurance options so no waivers needed.

Waivers like CDW and LDW are common in countries like the USA, but not in New Zealand.

  • Collision Damage Waiver (CDW): This is a type of protection that reduces your financial liability for any damage to the rental car itself, as long as you comply with the terms of the rental agreement. It's not exactly insurance but acts like one. If you have CDW and you get into an accident, you won't have to pay for all the repairs to the rental car. However, it usually doesn't cover damages to other cars or property, or any injuries.

At Spaceships New Zealand, Stress-Free Insurance is what takes care of this. Third-Party incidents are always covered (no matter the insurance option you have). A third-party incident is accidentally damaging someone else’s vehicle or property.

  • Loss Damage Waiver (LDW): LDW is similar to CDW but more comprehensive. It includes collision damage and also covers theft or loss of the rental car. Like CDW, LDW reduces your financial liability if the rental car is damaged or stolen, assuming you haven't violated the rental agreement.

At Spaceships New Zealand, Stress-Free Insurance is what takes care of this. Your Spaceship is insured for damages caused by break-in but the removable contents are not and will be your responsibility while the vehicle is on hire. We recommend having your own travel insurance to cover any associated costs in the unlikely event of a theft or loss of belongings.
