New Zealand’s trusty seafaring heroes, Bluebridge and Interislander, have experienced some issues. These recent hiccups have caused a few cancellations and will possibly lead to further disruptions and/or sailings being booked out ultra-fast.

Every year, when the Kiwi summer is on the horizon, everyone's rushing to book their ferry tickets. So here's the Space Commander’s announcement:

Book your ferry tickets pronto!

Don't wait until you're stranded on the dock, waving goodbye to a departing ship. The early bird catches the worm, or in this case, the early booker gets a spot on the deck.

  • Have a Spaceships Ferry Voucher? Turn it into a ferry booking now! You will receive a flexible ferry ticket so it is easy to change your sailing dates if it is needed.

  • Prefer to book directly with the ferry company? Do it now!

What is causing ferry disruptions?

Cook Strait ferry disruptions in New Zealand can occur relatively frequently due to various factors. The Cook Strait is the body of water between the North and South Islands of New Zealand, and ferries are a critical link for both passengers and freight. Here's what can cause ferry disruptions.

  • Weather Conditions like high winds, rough seas, fog and low visibility. Cook Strait is known for its unpredictable and often severe weather.

  • Mechanical Issues like maintenance needs and breakdowns. Like all vessels, ferries require regular maintenance. Unexpected or planned maintenance or breakdowns can cause service interruptions.

  • Operational Challenges like crew availability can impact the ability to run ferries as scheduled.

In case of issues, ferry customers that have already booked get a faster resolution than customers trying to get a last-minute booking. Therefore it is highly recommended to book your ferry crossing as soon as possible, either via a Spaceships Ferry Voucher (make sure to send in your dates asap) or directly with the ferrry company.
