Yes, you can pay with a debit card that is accepted in New Zealand (Visa or Mastercard). Just make sure you have enough money on your card to make the payment. Also, make sure your debit card can be used to make payments outside of your country and/or in a currency you usually don't make payments in.

The settings and options depend on your bank, their systems & tools and the card but generally speaking there are settings or options to let your bank know you will be using your card in New Zealand for payments in New Zealand dollars. That way your bank's security systems don't block the payment you're trying to make.

  • In some countries you can set overseas usage in the bank's app (for example the "wereld" (world) setting for Dutch debit cards)

  • Or there is a setting/option where you can mention you will be travelling overseas, and specifically to countries X, Y and Z.

Some examples of how to help your bank process the payment in New Zealand Dollars smoothly. We have noticed that currently Danish banks have strict(er) security rules which means without contacting your bank first or update your debit card's settings the first payment in a foreign currency will be blocked by the bank's security systems. Always contact your bank when this happens, but preferably before.

Tips for using a debit card overseas. To do before you travel

  • Notify Your Bank: Inform your bank of your travel dates and destinations. Specifically mention if you plan to make large payments (e.g., rental deposit or payments) in New Zealand. Ask if they can temporarily increase your daily spending or withdrawal limit.

  • Set a PIN: New Zealand prefers PIN over signature for card transactions. Ensure your debit card has a 4-digit PIN enabled before departure.

  • Carry a Backup: Bring a travel-friendly debit card like Wise or a small amount of cash as a backup. These travel cards often have better acceptance and lower fees abroad.

  • Use the Right Card: For rental deposits or large payments, use a credit card if possible, as these are more widely accepted and less likely to be declined for holds.
