A crack in your windscreen can happen quickly: a stone from the road, a gravel truck, or a branch. The good news is that most cracks can be sorted out easily. Here is what to do, step by step.
Step 1: Check if it is safe to keep driving
First, look at the crack and where it is:
Small chip or a short crack away from your direct view: this is usually fine for a short while. Keep driving carefully and contact us as described below.
A long crack (for example 20 cm or more), a crack that is spreading, or a crack in front of the driver's seat: do not keep driving until you have spoken to us. A crack can weaken the windscreen and affect your view.
Also check that the wipers still work and that the windscreen does not block your view of the road. If in doubt, stop the campervan in a safe place first.
Step 2: Take photos of the crack
Take a few clear photos of the crack from the inside and the outside, and one photo that shows where it is on the windscreen. These photos help our team to quickly see how serious it is, and they are useful for the insurance.
Step 3: Report it to us
Cracks in the windscreen are not something we can fully judge over chat or email, because it involves glass and your safety. Please contact our 24/7 Roadside Assistance:
Phone (free within New Zealand): 0800 772 237, then choose option 3
Send the photos when our team asks for them, or share them via WhatsApp or email.
You can find all our contact options on our contact page.
Step 4: What happens next
Our team will look at your photos and location and tell you what to do:
If the crack is small and not in your view, you can usually keep driving and we will arrange the repair or replacement when you return the campervan.
If the crack is large, spreading, or in your view, we will arrange help on the road or a repair nearby.
If the crack gets worse while you are driving, or if it starts to affect your view, stop in a safe place and call Roadside Assistance straight away: 0800 772 237, option 3.
Is the windscreen covered by insurance?
Whether the repair or replacement is covered depends on the insurance option you chose.
How to report the crack officially
Even if the crack is small, please also report it as an incident, so our team has it on file. This article explains how.
