New Zealand’s fuel supply is secure, and there’s no need to worry about shortages or restrictions. The government is taking proactive steps - planning ahead, monitoring global changes, and ensuring the country is ready for any scenario. This means you can focus on what matters most: enjoying your campervan road trip without stress.
The New Zealand Government has a Fuel Response Plan to ensure fuel remains available, even during global supply disruptions. The plan has four phases, each with specific actions to manage fuel supply and demand. The goal is to keep essential services running and ensure everyone has fair access to fuel.
Phase 1: Watchful - CURRENT PHASE
What’s happening? Fuel is available nationwide, but prices may rise due to global market changes.
What should I do? Fill up your campervan as usual, no need to stockpile fuel.
Phase 2: Precautionary
What’s happening? Fuel is still available, but there are signs of potential supply disruptions.
What should I do? Continue to fill up as normal but maybe combine trips.
Phase 3: Managed
What’s happening? Fuel supply is tighter, and the government prioritises critical services (e.g., hospitals, emergency services, food supply chains).
What should I do? Follow any fuel purchase limits. Check daily updates to understand how long restrictions will last. Be assured that essential services are protected.
Phase 4: Protected
What’s happening? There is a significant or sustained fuel shortage, and strict rules are in place to ensure fair distribution.
What should I do? Use fuel stations as directed by authorities. Check daily updates for the latest information. Essential services (food supply, emergency response) are fully protected.
How will I know if the phase changes?
A group of senior ministers decides if New Zealand moves between phases. They consider factors like:
Export restrictions from fuel suppliers.
Changes in New Zealand’s fuel stock levels.
Reports from fuel companies about supply issues.
International events affecting fuel supply.
You’ll be informed through public announcements and updates on the MBIE website.
Will my campervan road trip be affected?
No major impact at Phase 1 & 2. Fill up as usual and plan your trips efficiently.
When Phase 3 or 4 are active, follow any purchase limits and use fuel stations as directed. Essential services (including food and emergency response) are prioritised, so your travel plans may need flexibility.
