Almost all Spaceships have 4-speed automatic transmission / automatic gear, so they are easy to drive (we can give you a quick lesson if you’ve only driven manual cars before). They have electronic overdrive for better fuel economy.

The exception is the Cosmo VW Campervan, which comes in two models: automatic transmission or manual transmission. You can select a manual model or automatic model when booking the Cosmo Campervan. We have labelled them clearly so it's easy to see which model you are booking. The selection of automatic gearbox or manual gearbox is guaranteed when booking a Cosmo Campervan. You'll always get the model you selected.

This also means that you can hire & drive a Spaceships campervan on an automatic-only licence. As long as you are 18 years or older and your driving licence is valid & can be used in New Zealand.
