YES, you certainly can if you have booked direct with Spaceships New Zealand. If you have booked via a third-party like a travel agency you'll need to contact them to change the insurance level.
Booking direct has lots of advantages. Having full control over your own booking is just one of them. Then you can change the selected insurance level before pick-up yourself. You can make all kinds of changes, including upgrading/downgrading the insurance level, via the Online Check-in Portal. The check-in systems opens as soon as your booking is confirmed and closes on the day of pick-up.
We provide three different insurance (vehicle protection) options for your campervan road trip in New Zealand.
Standard insurance with 3rd party cover is included with every Spaceships campervan hire, but it comes with bond: $5,000 on Standard.
You can upgrade to Partial insurance, which has bond of $2,500. Partial insurance doesn't offer more coverage. It's just that the bond is lower.
For full peace of mind, we recommend going for the Stress-Free Insurance option. It covers almost everything and there's no bond. It provides your vehicle with the maximum cover available, so you can relax and enjoy your holiday stress-free. It is the insurance option we highly recommend.
Car insurance isn't compulsory in New Zealand, so even if an accident isn't your fault you can still be liable for the damage if we are unsuccessful in recovering the costs from the other party involved. Stress-Free is the only insurance option that covers a situation like this. It's the only option that will give you complete peace of mind while roadtripping in New Zealand.
