The key of a rental campervan gets used a lot, so over time it can wear out: it may bend, get soft, become hard to turn, or even snap off in the lock. This is usually not your fault - it is simply what happens with keys on rental vehicles. Here is what to do.
First: do not force a damaged key
If your key is bent, soft, or hard to turn:
- Do not force it into the lock or keep wiggling it. It can break off in the lock, and then the campervan needs a locksmith instead of just a new key.
- If you can still open the campervan, keep using it gently and let us know straight away so we can arrange a replacement.
- There is no spare key in the campervan, so let us know as soon as you notice a problem with your key.
Key broken off in the lock
If the key has broken off in the lock:
- Contact our 24/7 Roadside Assistance: 0800 772 237 (free within New Zealand), then choose option 3.
- Tell them you are renting a Spaceships campervan, where you are, and your booking reference.
- Do not try to glue the pieces back together or reattach anything yourself.
Our Roadside Assistance partner NZRA will take it from there and arrange the help you need.
Continued driving after a defect
Please note: keep driving the campervan after something has broken can lead to more serious damage. Always contact us as soon as you notice a problem.
